Grass is the leader open source GIS nowadays. It manage both raster and vector information, 2D and 3D models, and can be used on different operating systems and platforms. features more than 350 functions, including image processing, raster analysis, import and export, and vector and network analysis.

GIS are frequently used for archaeologist as a documentation tool, and also to analyse archaeological data. For this purpose it is necessary to have a powerful GIS system with a complete set of analysis tools.

Open source software is a wonderful choice for this purpose. As anyone can improve the system and add new functionality, open source systems are more dynamic.

One of the main characteristic of Grass GIS is that it can be operated, besides the usual graphical user interface, from the operating system shell. This provides it with a powerful scripting capability.

This workshop aims to introduce in a concise way the main functionality of Grass and its usage paradigms. Special attention will be devoted to the scripting capability. Basic GIS knowledge is required.

The aim of this workshop will be the presentation of the Mnemea database system. Mnemea is a computer application based on relational database systems, whose main aim is the management of the archaeological data, both technical and administrative. This application has been developed on the base of the commercial software Filemaker^© v10 and according to the main rules of standardization. The application provides friendly use and high capacity.

This software is designed to assist in the management of Archaeological museums, public agencies of heritage management or research teams specialized in archaeological surveying.

Mnemea software has been developed from several inter-related modules, that allows a better efficiency in data entry. Each of which handles different data types:

• Administrative and spatial site management.

• Management of fieldwork seasons in each site.

• Powerful tool for stratigraphic units management.

• Registration, classification and analysis of archaeological items and samples.

• Management of archaeological items location and storage.

• Graphic records (photography and plots).

• Digital records management.

This computer application provides an high searching capacity and report generation. The software can work locally or remote, in client-server mode, and can hold up an elevated number of system entries, giving it a great networking capacity.

The session will run 60-90 minutes, focused to explain the features and powerful of this computer application and several study cases by the developers, in which the attendees can participate actively. Also, will be presented the use of this database system in the management of a regional museum by the museum director. Attendees do not need prerequisites other than minimal computer ability or minimal experience computer data management. The maximum number of participants will be limited to the size of the venue.

Open source GIS technology has shown unprecedented dynamics in its recent development. There are spatial databases like PostGIS, number crunching heavy-weights like GRASS GIS, versatile tools such as GDAL/OGR, web map servers and countless other tools and applications that provide solutions for virtually every imaginable GIS task.

A more recent phenomenon has been the emergence of several user-friendly desktop GIS solutions, such as Quantum GIS, OpenJUMP, Kosmo GIS, and, perhaps most remarkably, gvSIG. The latter is a relatively young project, but generously funded by the Valencian "Conselleria d'Infraestrutures i Transport" (http://www.gvsig.gva.es/eng/inicio-gvsig/).

GvSIG has been growing rapidly, attracting a large number of users and developers world-wide. This is perhaps due to the fact that, in its latest release, gvSIG represents the first open source desktop GIS that is quasi up-to-par with commercially licensed products when it comes to interactive data management and analysis.

The software is now well established in Spanish speaking communities around the world but has been struggling for a foothold in other countries, mainly due to incomplete and ambiguous translations of its user interface.

Recently, we at OA Digital (http://oadigital.net), as part of our open source software development activities, have decided to create and maintain a customized and enhanced version of gvSIG, targeted specifically at English speaking users and archaeologists. We provide our own distribution of gvSIG, available for free download at http://www.oadigital.net/software/gvsigoade.

The OA Digital Edition of gvSIG features a much-improved English user interface translation and menu structure, a simpler installation procedure and additional documentation and sample data. It also comes bundled with everything you need to experience the full richness of gvSIG's features in one package. This includes extensions for remote sensing, advanced geoprocessing and network analysis.

GvSIG represents a historic chance to establish a free GIS application, designed by archaeologists for archaeologists, in our discipline. At Oxford Archaeology, this software now serves as a corner stone of a complex GIS production workflow.

We invite you to join this introductory workshop and see for yourself. Participants will get a concise and targeted introduction to gvSIG, its main usage paradigms and potentials plus some hands-on examples of data analysis functions. Basic GIS knowledge is required.

Prior to the invention of photography, there was only limited possibility to capture the real world in an objective way, main reason being that all kind of literature and arts, especially paintings and sculptures, contain an intrinsic subjective component. Although photography, and later on digital image processing, have provided complete new possibilities for archiving and documentation tasks, any 2D-technique is inherently characterized by strong limitations to reproduce the 3-dimensional world. However, within the last 10 years, advanced 3-dimensional surface scanners have been developed, now opening the 3rd dimension to digital image processing techniques.

The workshop will concentrate on high definition 3D-surface scanning and related software for data processing, optimized for the requirements of arts and cultural heritage, allowing the 3-dimensional digitization and analysis of art objects and paintings at the highest level of resolution and accuracy.

Focus of attention will be given on the following applications:

• Digitization of archaeological findings with highest definition
• Documentation and archiving of archaeological treasures
• 3D data processing and data analysis

Covering these subjects, the workshop is equally addressed to archaeologists, anthropologists, paleontologists as well as photographers, computer scientists, restaurateurs, conservators.

The workshop will consist of three parts:

• Part 1 will give an overview about the state of the art of high definition 3D-surface scanners and related applications
• Part 2 will present the processing steps needed to transform sampled 3D data into good quality 3D models (including processing of both geometry and color data) through a demo of open source tool (MeshLab)
• Part 3 : round table discussion about using 3D technologies in CH, to be held on friday.

Participants without previous knowledge in the field of 3D-scanning and 3D data processing will be given the opportunity to gain their first experience in scanning archaeological objects. Attendees already familiar or experienced with 3D-scanning can broaden their knowledge in this field by getting in touch with the latest developments.

This seminar is about the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model (CRM), a top-level ontology and ISO standard (ISO21127:2006) for the semantic integration of cultural information. It will explain the scope and objectives of the model. It will detail the construction principles used and the major concepts it defines.

In order to use the model for information integration, multiple data structures have to be mapped to the model, so that data contents can be transformed automatically into a CRM compatible form and be merged. Alternatively, the mappings can be used to transform queries against the CRM into queries against local data structures. The mapping is the critical step, in which the domain expert’s knowledge is needed. IT tools can automatically execute later steps. The mapping process also shows compatibility with the CRM.

The seminar will explain in practical examples and exercises how to map a data structure to the CIDOC CRM.
